Regan argues that <strong>active buying and selling of equities remains an immensely complex<\/strong> and time-sensitive undertaking, and that most investors\u2014even those who manage large funds for a living\u2014have proven largely ineffectual at it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most complex component is not in the buying; it is in knowing when to sell, Regan writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing a new 2019 study, <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3301277\">\u201cSelling Fast and Buying Slow\u201d<\/a> released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssrn.com\/index.cfm\/en\/\">SSRN<\/a>, Regan reports that an assessment of over four million trades in 783 portfolios from 2000 to 2016 \u201cfound that <strong>stockpickers actually showed skill when buying<\/strong>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever,\u201d Regan writes, \u201cthe sales by these institutional investors cost them as much as 100 basis points, or a full percentage point, of yearly returns compared with a no-skill strategy of simply selling holdings at random. \u201c <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fact points to two conclusions. First, not nearly enough research has been conducted on the still largely <strong>unmastered science of knowing when to sell a stock<\/strong> (though there exist abundant successful formulas for knowing when to buy). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, in the absence of that research, active traders are not faring well.
