{"id":1611,"date":"2019-05-26T21:50:54","date_gmt":"2019-05-26T20:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/best-articles\/?p=1611"},"modified":"2024-05-27T20:18:05","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T19:18:05","slug":"amazons-priorities-over-the-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/best-articles\/2019\/2019-05\/amazons-priorities-over-the-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon\u2019s Priorities Over the Years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><em>Viewed in <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/05\/amazons-priorities-over-the-years-based-on-jeff-bezoss-letters-to-shareholder\"><em><em>Harvard Business Review.<\/em><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Harvard Business School professor Boris Groysberg, who has partnered with us on several corporate research projects, teamed up with Harvard Business School researcher Tricia Gregg to analyze, with the aid of two technical tools (NVivo 12 Pro and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC)), Amazon\u2019s annual letters to shareholders over the 20-year period of 1997 to 2017.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What emerges, the authors contend, is insight into Amazon\u2019s priorities, which they summarize in three conclusions: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.) Amazon markets itself as <strong>customer-centric<\/strong>. Indeed, a careful review of the words in 20 years of its annual shareholder letters backs that up. The word \u201ccustomer\u201d has been the most used word collectively over these 20 years of letters, exceeding even use of even its own name. But this is not the case in each of these 20 years; in some years, other words appear more regularly, reflecting other organizational priorities in some years;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> 2.) While references to customers are a predominant theme collectively over the 20 letters, there is some variance. Since 2013, <strong>the word has appeared less frequently<\/strong>, the authors observe; and <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.) Bezos has rather consistently presented <strong>Amazon employees<\/strong> as a top organizational concern. This too reflects in these 20 years of shareholder letters.
