It is a question that confounds even some of the world\u2019s top business management experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> One such example is Michael E. Porter, a Harvard Business School professor, who forthrightly acknowledged a decade ago that \u201cwe had little understanding of what CEOs actually do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this humble acknowledgement from a professor at one of the world\u2019s elite business schools led to a hugely constructive end. Together with colleague Nitin Nohria, also a Harvard Business School professor, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porter launched a study designed to answer the question. The two collected and analyzed 60,000 hours of data from 27 CEOs over a decade, which culminated in a major <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/07\/the-leaders-calendar?#how-ceos-manage-time\">article<\/a>, \u201cHow CEOs manage time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What did &nbsp;Porter and Nohria find? Among the CEOs they monitored, they spent 25 percent of their time on \u201cfunctional and business unit reviews,\u201d 25 percent on \u201cdeveloping people and relationships,\u201d 21 percent on \u201cstrategy,\u201d 16 percent on \u201cmatching organizational structure and culture with the needs of the business,\u201d and four percent on \u201cmergers and acquisitions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McKinssey and Company has now recognized the article\u2019s importance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/about-us\/new-at-mckinsey-blog\/how-do-ceos-manage-their-time-the-winners-of-the-60th-annual-hbr-mckinsey-award-explain\">awarding<\/a> Porter and Nohria its 2018 HBR McKinssey Award, which is given annually to the authors of the best <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em> article of that respective year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When one of the world\u2019s leading management firms finds an article in one of the world\u2019s leading business publications the best of the year, it\u2019s probably worth reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viewed in McKinsey We read lots about CEOs, but how does a CEO actually spend his or her time?
