Stoll writes in this column. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least in part this is because <strong>data is valuable but imperfect<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stoll cites Google chief decision scientist Cassie Kozyrkov, for instance, who warned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2019\/06\/the-first-thing-great-decision-makers-do?mod=article_inline\"><em>Harvard Business Review<\/em><\/a> article last June that <strong>data \u201cis malleable and can be distorted<\/strong> to conform to pre-existing biases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, increasingly, the world\u2019s business thought leaders and icons are turning to <strong>data for answers to important business questions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stoll cites Amazon\u2019s Jeff Bezos as a prime example. \u201cCompanies wanting to work with the e-commerce giant know not to make a pitch without abundant data to support their claims,\u201d he writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stoll cites management consultant W. Edwards Deming, who famously said \u201cI<strong>n God we trust. All others bring data.<\/strong>\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the need for managerial intuition still exists and will likely never dissipate completely, 21<sup>st<\/sup> century business is setting up to be driven increasingly by data, and this data is increasingly available and valued in our technology-driven era. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viewed in The Wall Street Journal.
