{"id":1746,"date":"2020-03-04T14:53:41","date_gmt":"2020-03-04T13:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/best-articles\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2020-06-02T13:46:35","modified_gmt":"2020-06-02T12:46:35","slug":"are-your-companys-leaders-and-data-scientists-on-the-same-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/best-articles\/2020-02\/are-your-companys-leaders-and-data-scientists-on-the-same-page\/","title":{"rendered":"Are your company\u2019s leaders and data scientists on the same page?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/02\/are-your-companys-leaders-and-data-scientists-on-the-same-page\">Viewed in <em>Harvard Business Review.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>ascent of data science<\/strong> is increasingly both <strong>undeniable<\/strong> and self-evident. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To one degree or another, nearly all large companies are engaged in it and see <strong>emerging artificial intelligence<\/strong> and other <strong>data-related technology<\/strong> tools available to them with great promise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joel Shapiro, an associate professor at Northwestern University\u2019s Kellogg School of Management, observes that <strong>data science has proven immensely valuable to some companies<\/strong>; Target, for instance, turned to it intensively in the 2010s as many of their performance metrics were underperforming, resulting in improvements in operations and efficiencies at a time when the company was seeking both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge, however, is that <strong>data science works bes<\/strong>t when it is <strong>fully aligned with management<\/strong> and its performance objectives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such alignment is rare, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More commonly, Shapiro writes in this <em>Harvard Business Review<\/em> article, companies find a \u201cmisalignment between expectations at the top of the organization and the foundation of what data science can realistically deliver.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What accounts for this misalignment? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, Shapiro argues, it is executives\u2019 <strong>excessive expectations<\/strong> for what data science can realistically deliver. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unreasonably inflated expectations are misguided, however, since they \u201ccan reflect a lack of appreciation of just <strong>how impactful small improvements can be<\/strong>\u2014for example, slight increases in profitability per customer or conversion rates,\u201d Shapiro writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not all blame for such misalignments between executive and data science teams lies with executives\u2019 oversized expectations. One other major contributing factor is the tendency of <strong>consulting firms\u2019 sales teams to overstate these expectations<\/strong> in a bid to win a company\u2019s business; this misaligns expectations from the get go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shapiro lays out three steps that can assist in resolving these and other challenges, resulting in closer alignment between management and their data science teams\u2014and make the great promise of data science even more promising to companies: #1 Give a <strong>dose of reality<\/strong>;  #2<strong> Build on past successes<\/strong> and achievements and;   #3 Let<strong> data scientists do the talking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viewed in Harvard Business Review.
