Its business model is proving almost <strong>perfectly suited<\/strong> to our 21<sup>st<\/sup> century needs, and it ranks today as one of the world\u2019s leading companies by <strong>nearly every metric<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this success, however, the company has not been immune from criticism. Those <strong>criticisms<\/strong> have included the company\u2019s workplace culture and particularly the wages it pays its entry-level and other employees even while the company experiences vast financial profitability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Inc.<\/em> details how Amazon founder and chief executive officer Jeff Bezos responded to this criticism. He did so, in the U.S. market in 2018, by increasing employee wages to a minimum of $15-an-hour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> The action was at least partly responsive to the criticisms, but it is the public announcement that accompanied Amazon\u2019s action on wages that impressed <em>Inc.<\/em> \u201cWe listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we wanted to lead,\u201d Bezos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20181002005317\/en\/Amazon-Raises-Minimum-Wage-15-U.S.-Employees\">said<\/a> in the company\u2019s press release announcing the move on wages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">\u201c<strong>We listened to our critics\u201d<\/strong>  <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">\u201cWe listened to our critics\u201d  are five special words in corporate leadership, <em>Inc . <\/em>contends.
