In some organizations, it disappeared. In others, it felt optional. That cycle is now reversing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, COO appointments reached a seven-year high across listed companies globally, with 146 new COOs, up from 130 the year before. At the same time, departures fell to 65, creating a net expansion of 81 roles. This is not a rebound. It signals a structural shift in how companies operate<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complexity is winning<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Geopolitics, supply chains, AI, and multi-speed organizations are stretching leadership models. What once sat within functions now requires coordination across the enterprise. CEOs are responding by reinforcing a role designed to connect the system. The COO is becoming where complexity turns into execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is now visible across industries. As of March 2026, roughly one third of medium and large companies globally have a COO reporting directly to the CEO. Across our global org charts, the role is most present in health care (41%), finance (38%), and services and transportation (35%), with slightly lower penetration in technology and manufacturing. The pattern is uneven, but clearly expanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The mandate is moving to the center<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The role is no longer just about running operations. It is increasingly tied to transformation. As companies push large-scale change, particularly around AI and operating models, the need for end-to-end ownership is rising. The COO is becoming the executive who turns ambition into delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That shift is reflected in hiring. Most new COOs are internal and first-time in the role. Companies are prioritizing leaders who know the business, can move fast, and already have trust across the organization. In a high-pressure environment, execution speed outweighs external pedigree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stability is gaining value<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Average COO tenure has risen to 4.1 years, the highest since tracking began. In uncertain conditions, continuity in the operating seat is an advantage. But expectations are rising. COOs are now judged on their ability to translate transformation into measurable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In short<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The COO role is becoming structural again. Not as a duplicate of the CEO, but as a force multiplier.
