It feels safe. But in today\u2019s environment, proven experience can become a trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because markets, technologies, regulation, talent expectations, and AI are changing faster than old playbooks can adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk is not lack of experience.<br>The risk is relying too heavily on experience built for a different era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>External CEO candidates are often judged on potential.<br>Internal candidates are judged on limitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boards know the flaws of internal leaders.<br>They imagine the strengths of outsiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet internal leaders often see the organization more clearly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where culture is under strain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where assumptions are breaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where execution is slowing down<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where second-order risks are building<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And in many cases, they already understand what needs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best leaders today are not necessarily the ones with the most familiar r\u00e9sum\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are the ones who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>learn fast when conditions change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>operate without a clear playbook<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>challenge old assumptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>combine confidence with curiosity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>adapt faster than the market shifts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s becoming visible in org charts too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More boards are valuing leaders who can connect technology + operations + people + strategy, not just protect the existing model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> A more useful question for boards may now be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>\u201cWho is most capable of leading through what comes next?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this does not apply only to CEOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same shift is happening across the C-suite: CFOs, CHROs, CIOs, COOs, strategy and business leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage increasingly goes to leaders who can evolve faster than their environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Warm thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egonzehnder.com\/office\/new-york\/consultant\/irina-wolpert\">Irina Wolpert<\/a> and the teams at Egon Zehnder for these thoughtful and timely insights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Viewed in Egon Zehnder insights Many boards still begin succession discussions the same way: \u201cLet\u2019s find someone who has already done the job.\u201d It sounds rational.
