Our focus: how digital, data, and artificial intelligence roles have evolved among executives reporting directly to the CEO (N-1) or one level below (N-2), the layers where strategic direction turns into execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. AI Moves to the Core<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In just 16 months, the number of top-level AI roles grew sixfold, and by elevenfold within the Global Fortune 500.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"374\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-at-the-Top-Company-Type-1-e1762983545478.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4109\" style=\"width:391px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><br><small>Growth of AI roles (June 2024 \u2192 Oct 2025) by company type<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title <em>Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer<\/em> \u2014 almost unseen in 2024 \u2014 is now the first truly dedicated AI role at the top of the org chart, with 286 active leaders. It is followed by <em>Chief Data &amp; AI Officer<\/em>, <em>Head of AI &amp; Data Science<\/em>, and <em>VP, AI Solutions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI has become a regular seat near the CEO, showing it is no longer an experiment but a corporate capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In earlier AI waves \u2014 Deep Learning (from 2012) and Generative AI (from 2022) \u2014 AI remained confined to technical experts. Fewer than 50 AI roles appeared at the top during those periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What changed in early 2025 is the rise of <em>agentic AI<\/em>: networks of specialized AI agents that coordinate and supervise one another, dividing tasks, checking outputs, and escalating exceptions for human judgment. This model is reshaping how large companies organize work, monitor compliance, and ensure performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/quantumblack\/our-insights\/the-state-of-ai\">Most projects remain in pilot phase<\/a>, but momentum and expectations have never been higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Transformation speeds differ by industry<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing, Services, and Healthcare are moving fastest\u2014embedding AI leadership into core operations. These disciplines have reached a phase of steady expansion and now form the platform supporting AI\u2019s next stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Strategic proximity to the CEO<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly one third of digital, data, and AI leaders now report directly to the CEO (N-1), a proximity that was rare even for CIOs a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-at-the-Top-Reporting-Levels.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4103\" style=\"width:419px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-at-the-Top-Reporting-Levels.png 517w, https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AI-at-the-Top-Reporting-Levels-300x115.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>Across the 45,000 companies, about 14,000 executives hold roles in these domains, averaging 1.5 per company. AI tools are spreading quickly but integrating them into daily workflows and leadership routines still takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the current monthly trend continues, by early 2027 more than 9,000 vice presidents of AI could sit on executive committees \u2014 slightly exceeding the number of vice presidents of digital.
