It\u2019s the obligatory necktie, and you would not be alone in asking: <strong>How precisely did we end up wearing these things?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It all began with 17<sup>th<\/sup> century warfare.\u00a0<\/strong> During the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) in Central Europe, Croatian mercenaries supporting the French wore silk neckerchiefs. The French were impressed with them, and King of France Louis XIV, at a very young age, began wearing them in 1646, setting off a fashion trend among French nobility. The necktie again featured prominently later in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century in the Battle of SteenKerque between France and European powers in present day Belgium, where French princes wore them into combat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Neckties.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-610 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Neckties.jpg\" alt=\"Herm\u00e8s Neckties\" width=\"534\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Neckties.jpg 534w, https:\/\/www.theofficialboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Neckties-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Since, the necktie has gone from being the attire of nobility in armed conflict to the attire of everyday business<\/strong>, undergoing continuous and somewhat dramatic changes and improvements in its appearance through the years.\u00a0 By the early 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, the bow tie had become a fairly common fashion component of men\u2019s formal attire.\u00a0 Later, in 1926, a New York City fashion designer, Jesse Langsdorf, extended the necktie into three pieces of apparel in a style that has evolved by largely perpetuated since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The necktie has undergone some tweaking in appearance and style<\/strong>, as it did following World War II when it became wider and its colors bolder, and in the 1980s when it was narrowed considerably, only to be subsequently widened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, four options of knots are mostly used with ties<\/strong>\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four-in-hand_knot\">four-in-hand knot<\/a> (probably the most common), the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pratt_knot\">Pratt knot<\/a> (developed by an employee at the United States Chamber of Commerce), the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Half-Windsor_knot\">half-Windsor knot<\/a>\u00a0 (creating a crisp triangular knot) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windsor_knot\">Windsor knot<\/a> (creating the widest tie knot) out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-85-Ways-Tie-Aesthetics\/dp\/0767906438\">The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It can be stated safely that,<strong> at no time, has the necktie been comfortable per se<\/strong>, so it\u2019s also not surprising that executives have pushed back against it in recent years\u2014first in the introduction of casual Fridays and now (not so uncommonly) in the more informal workplace, where ties are ditched completely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The tie\u2019s death is not complete, of course.\u00a0<\/strong> But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702304106704579135772899428460\"><em>The Wall Street Journal\u2019s<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jortved\"><em> John Ortved <\/em><\/a>felt comfortable enough, in 2013, to publish a quasi-obituary for it in his article, \u201cThe Tie is Dead. (Long Live the Tie).\u201d\u00a0 It featured a photo from the G-8 Summit in Northern Ireland, where leaders of the world\u2019s great powers (at the urging of former British Prime Minister David Cameron) <strong>all appeared tieless.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As even world leaders have opted out of the tie,<\/strong> it\u2019s reasonable to ask if the tie will live to endure in 21<sup>st<\/sup> century business especially.\u00a0 \u201cThe tie is definitely not dead,\u201d Saks Fifth Avenue\u2019s men\u2019s fashion director told <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, \u201cit\u2019s just not a growing business at the moment.\u201dMeanwhile with so many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/so-many-ties-so-many-colors-1441897293\">vibrant brand options<\/a>, there&#8217;s no excuse to not tie the knot.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wsj-article-headline slideshow-headline\"><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a hot afternoon and that tight piece of silk or microfiber around your neck is feeling pretty uncomfortable.
