Last November, when I was attending Dreamforce in San Francisco, I saw many friends using Twitter intensively for their professional life. At the same time, almost all Salesforce presenters were providing their Twitter ID rather than their professional email. It was time for me learn about this trend and open my own Twitter account!
At the same time, I wanted to examine our collected data to understand what was going on with Twitter in the global corporate world. First, I looked at how the 1,000 most popular executives on the planet were using their Twitter accounts.
12% of top executives have public Twitter accounts.• Their highest share by continent is in the US and in Asia.
• Their highest share by industry is in Media and High tech.
• 18% of them have fewer than 50 followers.
• 20% of them have more than 10,000 followers.
• 16% of them are women.
1% of the 1,000 top executives have more than 100,000 followers.
• 3 are women: Marissa Mayer (Yahoo!), Meg Whitman(HP) & Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook).
• 2 work for non-US companies: Emilio Azcarraga Jean (Grupo Televisa); Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel).
• Bill Gates is #1 with 14.7M followers.
Twitter remains exclusive within the top 1,000 most popular executives. It is used by only 12% of them and concentrated in the U.S. Media and the U.S. High Tech. The top 10 executives grab over 98% of the total number of followers.
